“Between Gaza and Naples - This Children’s Day, we would like to spotlight a project that follows the lives of two children growing up in two very different worlds.”

Between Gaza and Naples: A Childhood Story brings together two powerful perspectives -
Raffaele Annunziata (tylerdurdan*), an artist from Naples, and
Mahmoud Abu Al-Qaraya, a photographer from Gaza.

Through parallel images, the project traces childhood across two distant landscapes, different in reality, yet deeply connected through innocence, curiosity, and everyday resilience. It stands as a reminder that childhood is a universal right, no matter where a child is born.

More than a photographic project, Between Gaza and Naples becomes a narrative and ethical bridge , giving voice to those at risk of being silenced, and urging us to see, honour, and protect the childhoods unfolding around us.

Between Gaza and Naples. A Childhood Story was born from the encounter between two authors raised in seemingly opposite worlds, yet bound by the same question: what does it mean to remain human in a place that burns?

Mahmoud Abu Qaraya, a 29-year-old photographer and filmmaker from Gaza, and RaffaeleAnnunziata aka tylerdurdan, a Neapolitan photographer and storyteller, weave together fragments of their childhoods — one spent under the bombs during the genocide of the Palestinian people, the other at the margins of Mount Vesuvius.

“BETWEEN GAZA AND NAPLES”: a photographic project reminding us that childhood should be universal.

While Raffaele Annunziata was capturing in Naples the simplest moments of his daughter Dede’s daily life—from brushing her teeth in the morning, to the walk to school, to playing with her friends in the afternoon—Mahmoud was documenting the life of his niece Soso in Gaza. The same activities, the same habits, the same smiles… yet an entirely different backdrop. Framing Soso’s childhood are ruins, tanks, and bombs. And yet, hope has never abandoned Mahmoud.

This double interview with Raffaele and Mahmoud took place before the start of the current and fragile ceasefire—specifically, at a time when the world was scrambling to establish the absurd yet much-debated definition of “child.”

The project also supports the campaign “Sosteniamo Mahmoud e la sua famiglia a Gaza”, which helps Mahmoud and his family rebuild their lives.

Thank you Mahmoud and Raffaele for your time.

Why This Matters

This project is more than a photo essay — it is a testimony of resilience.
It captures moments of ordinary childhood in Gaza and Naples, reminding us that children everywhere deserve to wake up safely, go to school, play, and dream.

Sharing this work means giving a voice to Mahmoud, who is now displaced with his niece Soso, and keeping their story alive in front of audiences around the world.
Every exhibition, every article, every conversation sparked by these images is an act of cultural resistance — and a step toward empathy and justice.
